Demolition
Must projects involve some sort of demolition whether it be inside and/or outside, unless of course it is an entire new build. Our house required some sort of demotion both inside and outside. Although demolition may sound like just ripping things out and removing them, there is actually more to it. Demolition is relatively cheap, unless it requires things such as scaffolding and asbestos safety.
The majority of costs of demolition are dumping fees, especially if it includes dumping asbestos. Skips are not cheap and we decided to buy a large trailer and dump most if not all ourselves.
Other costs are demolition blades for the reciprocating saw and labour costs in case you need another pair of hands.. As you are doing it yourself as an owner builder, it is not commercial so you can use council vouchers to keep the costs down even if the savings are minimal.
Demolishing a structure like a house is actually a skill as opposed to just smashing things. to do it safely you must either have previous hands-on experience or outsource it. Having been in the building industry for since 1996 I have had plenty of hours pulling old houses apart. This one is no different.
It took us 10 days and about 100 hours to demolish the back. You can all about the process in our 10 blog posts, starting here.

Demolishing anything externally requires Council approvals and that takes tine, a lot of time. Inside the house things can be demolished in preparation for the big stuff.
