Architectural (Detailed) Designs

Every project starts with designs. Ours started with scribbles on recycled pieces of paper. We don’t call these concept designs, we call them ideas. It visualises how we think things might look like one day.

But ideas aren’t going to be good enough for any local council. The ideas need to be made look pretty and have lots of words and numbers associated with them. Our ideas morphed into Concept Designs, being the 1st step into the world of getting approvals.

Designs include:

  1. Concept Designs
  2. Detailed Designs
  3. Engineering Specifications

In this post we give you ideas on how to start designing your own dream home using free online tools and what to look or when engaging professional designers. We have collated details of some designers in and around Brisbane to help you getting started.

Lessons Learnt

These are some of the things we learnt:

  • Be patient; this phase is tedious, expensive and very very time consuming
  • Get (at least) indicative timeframes for each step in the process, and…
  • Ask for updates, at least once a week to keep track in your own head where things are at
  • Don’t be a perfectionist as minor changes can be made afterwards (depending on the changes) but the designs don’t have to be perfect (except for the engineering of course)

We use Smartdraw for our preliminary designs as well our electrical plans. Why? Because it’s easy to use, 10% online, powerful and affordable and it let’s you share it via a link (read only). I
