Termite Protection
There are termites everywhere in Australia. The need to protect your new home goes without saying. The best protection is to have the ability to visually inspect possible access points (like having your home entirely on stumps only). This is hardly ever possible though.
Australian Standard AS 3660.1 sets out the requirements for the design and construction of subterranean termite management systems for new buildings and new building work. There requirements for existing builds are different (we will explain this below).
When choosing a company to install your termite protections, you must make sure that:
- your installer has the appropriate licences (being “Termite management— chemical “and “Termite management— physical”)
- your installer holds a termite management— chemical occupational licence as issued by Department of Health
- be accredited by the manufacturer of the system/product they are installing (e.g. by Kordon which you can check here)
Here are the things we did to minimise the risk of damage caused by termites:
- engage experts before the build (aka pre-con)
- install pre-construction Kordon
- book in annual inspections
- keep garden beds away from the house
The QBCC has put together a nice summary called “Termite Management Systems Advisory Notes For Builders And Homeowners” which you can access here.
